The most common carport regret isn't color or roof style. It's size: a cover that is a few feet too narrow to open doors comfortably, or a few feet too short for the truck with the hitch on.
Start with what you park
Measure the vehicles, trailers or equipment that will live under the roof, then add room to work around them:
- Width: allow space to open doors on both sides of every vehicle, plus a walkway.
- Length: measure bumper to bumper, including hitches, racks and anything that sticks out.
- Height: for trucks with racks, RVs and boats on trailers, measure the highest point and leave clearance above it.
Think about the next vehicle too
Most people keep a carport far longer than the car under it. If an RV, a bigger truck or a tractor is in the next few years, size for it now. Adding length later is possible, but it is easier to get it right the first time.
Check the site
Walk the spot where the carport will sit. Look for slope, drainage, overhead lines and how you will drive in and out. A level, well-drained pad makes for a cleaner install and a longer-lasting building.
Not sure? Try it in 3D
The 3D designer lets you change width, length and height and see the building on screen before you talk to anyone. If you'd rather have someone walk through it with you, call or text and we'll help you size it.
